Wankhede Awaits: Shardul Aims for Steady Victory in Mumbai vs. Pondicherry Clash
After securing a crucial victory over Himachal Pradesh, Mumbai is set to play its next Ranji Trophy match against Pondicherry at the Wankhede Stadium. Captain Shardul Thakur emphasizes that adaptability will be crucial for success in this game.
Since January 2024, Mumbai has appeared at Wankhede only twice: once for a group league match against Uttar Pradesh and once in the Ranji Trophy final last year. The team has primarily used the MCA-BKC ground as its “home base.”
However, with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) assigning the upcoming match to the renowned Wankhede venue, the team must quickly recalibrate.
“The soil at Wankhede isn’t much different,” Shardul explained, “but it does have a sand-based outfield, which impacts ground conditions. All 11 players must adapt to this when fielding.” He further noted, “Players need to be conscious of the change in ground surface to align their individual preparations with the team’s transition from a regular field to one that’s sand-based.”
Reflecting on their last Wankhede game, Mumbai emerged as the Ranji Trophy champions for the 42nd time, but the team aims to focus on maintaining its successful trajectory rather than resting on past laurels.
“Considering today’s result, we could have easily secured 20 points if it weren’t for weather disruptions in the second game, which cost us valuable playing time. However, I am content with our current standing,” Shardul remarked. “From now on, our goal is to continue playing excellent cricket.”
Despite consistently strong performances, Shams Mulani has yet to secure an India-A team slot. Shardul remains confident that Mulani’s dedication will eventually be rewarded.
“India boasts a wealth of talented players, and it’s ultimately up to the selectors to decide what they are seeking. With the performances Shams has delivered, I’m confident he will receive his due recognition one day,” Shardul stated.
“India is a large nation, which means only 15 players can play for the national team or for India A at any given time, totaling 30 players. With hundreds of skilled players nationwide, Shams simply needs to remain patient, and his opportunity will come,” concluded Shardul.
