Usman Ghani: The Architect Behind Vidarbha’s Ascension

Vidarbha’s transformation in Indian domestic cricket over the past decade has been remarkable. From winning their first Ranji Trophy in the 2017-18 season to becoming a dominant force across formats, their success can be attributed to patience, strategic planning, and a commitment to long-term development.

For years, Vidarbha experienced inconsistent results, even competing in the Plate Group several times. A turning point came when Shashank Manohar, former BCCI president and ICC chairman, who also served as president of the Vidarbha Cricket Association, realized that addressing youth development was crucial. He enlisted Usman Ghani to concentrate on nurturing young talent.

Ghani recalls, “He advised me to focus on junior players and lay a strong foundation over three to four years. The goal was to identify top talent and develop them into a solid team.” Though initially reluctant, Ghani embraced Manohar’s vision and worked with Under-14 players, realizing their potential to be easily molded.

This strategic groundwork began bearing fruit as Vidarbha’s Under-14 team secured the Raj Singh Dungarpur Trophy. Success followed at higher age levels, with victories in the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy and multiple wins in the Under-19 Cooch Behar and Vinoo Mankad Trophies.

Players like Yash Rathod, Yash Kadam, Darshan Nalkande, and Atharva Taide progressed together, benefitting from a cohesive team culture. Opening batsman Aman Mokhade, a standout performer in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy, shared that their familiarity with each other’s strengths and weaknesses bolstered their confidence. Fast bowler Praful Hinge echoed this sentiment, crediting the team’s camaraderie for their success.

Under head coach Usman Ghani, whose tenure with the senior team began in the 2023-24 season, Vidarbha reached significant milestones, including qualifying for major tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and advancing to the Ranji Trophy final.

Heading into the 2024-25 season, Vidarbha Cricket Association officials strategically reviewed past performances and mapped out future plans. “Pre-season meetings with the president, selectors, and coaches helped us identify focus areas and enhance our strengths,” Ghani explains.

In a landscape where traditional cricket powerhouses like Tamil Nadu and Mumbai once dominated, Vidarbha now holds its ground, having won 132 of 229 matches across formats since the 2016-17 season. Leveraging technology, Vidarbha strives to stay ahead by encouraging players to refine their skills and develop new strategies.

Vidarbha’s recent 50-over title reflects the team’s collective resilience and individual accountability. With a youthful squad averaging about 24 years, Ghani is now focused on fostering talent capable of succeeding at higher levels. Players such as Harsh Dubey, Yash Thakur, and Danish Malewar are already gaining exposure with India A and in the IPL.

Ultimately, success at the international level demands mental strength, says Ghani. “Cricket fundamentals remain the same, but it’s the ability to handle pressure that sets players apart.” As he succinctly puts it, “It’s like an F1 race; the margin for error must be minimal.”
