Tamim Iqbal Steps Back from BCB Election Race
BCB ELECTIONS
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has retracted his candidacy for the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections, set to take place on October 6.
On Wednesday, October 1, the left-hand batsman visited the BCB headquarters to formally withdraw his nomination. At a subsequent press conference, he stated:
“As you know, today we’re pulling out our nominations. Including myself, about 14 to 15 people are doing so. The reason is quite clear, and I don’t think further details or explanations are needed.”
Initially eager to run for a director’s position, Tamim decided to step back at the last minute. Following his nomination, he publicly claimed there was government interference in the election process.
“From the beginning, I’ve said one thing, and now it’s clear to all of you the direction of this election and how it’s being conducted. Decisions are being made arbitrarily. This doesn’t resemble an election, and it’s unworthy of cricket.”
“When the Election Commission releases the list of today’s withdrawals, you’ll recognize the names as notable figures with substantial support. This is our protest against this tarnished process.”
The ex-captain emphasized that both Bangladesh cricket and its supporters deserve better.
“There has been much said over time, but fundamentally, we must reject participation in this polluted process. I consistently assert that neither Bangladesh cricket nor its fans deserve this,” Tamim remarked.
“I also wish to highlight that more candidates were inclined to withdraw today, but some were dissuaded or pressured to remain. Yet, if around 15 candidates backed out today, it signifies nearly half. I’ll discuss this further later.”
The former skipper was openly critical, labeling the election process a blemish on Bangladesh cricket.
“Victory or defeat aside, cricket has been the real loser today. There’s no dispute over this. Calls to eliminate match-fixing need to begin by rectifying flaws within election procedures first.”
“So, I have nothing further to add. It’s apparent who intervened, when, and in what manner. Regulations were reshuffled whenever deemed convenient. Who’s involved is obvious. While I won’t elaborate now, I intend to address this in the future.”
Concluding his statements, he said: “In closing, this election has left a dark mark on the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Participants surely recognize that this wasn’t a legitimate election. Thank you, and I have no additional messages to provide.”
