Minutes after India triumphed over Pakistan in their Asia Cup league match in Dubai, Suryakumar Yadav addressed a crowded press room, bypassing handshakes. When asked about the online chatter leading up to the match, he casually mentioned he was unaware of it, revealing that upon arriving in Dubai, the team made a conscious decision to delete apps and cut down external distractions by “70-80 percent.”

On the eve of another India-Pakistan encounter, Suryakumar faced the press once more. He was asked the same question, with a reminder of the recent events.

“Close your room, switch off your phone, and go to sleep,” he suggested with a smile. “I think that’s the best approach.”

He elaborated: “It’s easy to suggest, but tough to execute because you meet friends, dine out, and are surrounded by players who watch these things. It’s challenging, but ultimately, it’s about choosing what you want to absorb and focusing on training or playing.”

“I’ve emphasized this to the team: to succeed in this tournament and beyond, it’s crucial to tune out a lot of the external noise and only absorb the positives. I’m not advocating total ignorance; sometimes, valuable advice can strengthen your game. And that’s what matters to me. I feel everyone is in a good mental space.”

Once again, ahead of an India-Pakistan match, attention had wandered from cricket. Suryakumar’s responses refocused the conversation on the field, highlighting India’s dominant performance as the rightful subject.

When asked about India’s celebrations post-victory, he stated simply, “We won, so they celebrated. The country consistently supports us game after game, and this time will be no different. It’s a Sunday, so more people will be watching.”

“Sit back and enjoy the game. On the field, we’ll bring the same intensity and energy, aiming for our best performance.”

“We plan to do the same all over the field.”

The rivalry question arose: was it like the 2000s? “I can’t say, as I didn’t play back then,” he chuckled, yet quickly redirected the focus. “Regarding rivalry, I’m unsure what you mean. Once on the field, a full stadium awaits, and I see it as a time for entertainment.”

“With so many spectators, we have to entertain them with quality cricket. We don’t overthink things.”

“Having played three games, we’ve relished each win as much as the first. Every game poses new challenges, which we embrace, learning and applying those lessons in upcoming matches.”

Concerning India’s approach, possibly hinting at the handshake incident, he again highlighted cricket: “The match brings a challenging contest between bat and ball, fueled by a full crowd’s energy. We’re committed to representing our nation and enjoying the game.”

On whether his birthday match was career-defining, he responded, “For me, the best match was my debut for India. Every game is a proud, exhilarating experience. During the National Anthem, I stay composed, appreciative of every opportunity to represent India.”

“During the National Anthem, my hands stay closed. It’s a moment of reflection and gratitude for the chance to play as long as possible. It makes me incredibly content.”

Suryakumar skillfully addressed queries about rivalry and distractions without ever directly referencing the opponent; his focus remained solely on cricket.

His message after the previous Pakistan match echoed here: eliminate the apps, ignore the distractions, and focus on cricket. On the verge of another India-Pakistan showdown, Suryakumar reiterated his focus on the game.
