Abhishek Sharma made a bold statement in the 2025 Asia Cup. His previous T20I performances showed glimpses of talent, but this tournament validated his potential to influence top-level matches. His aggressive play style, characterized by high-risk shots, was supported by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Their confidence in him allowed Sharma to approach every match with a fearless mindset.

“I’ve never felt pressured in any match. We prepared for all games equally. Surya bhai and GG ji gave me the confidence to play my brand of cricket, understanding the ups and downs,” Abhishek remarked after being awarded the player of the tournament.

Despite the risks, Abhishek’s approach paid off: he amassed 314 runs across seven games with a strike rate of 200, leading India to its ninth Asia Cup victory.

“Playing with such high risk does bring failures, but the way Gambhir and Suryakumar supported and communicated with me was crucial. Their support was vital to playing fearlessly,” he reflected.

Abhishek’s journey was far from linear. Part of India’s 2018 U19 World Cup-winning team with Shubman Gill, he struggled for consistency with Delhi Capitals in the IPL and in domestic cricket. He views those experiences as valuable lessons that might not have been learned had success come easily.

“I played Under-19 cricket and then got opportunities. My journey was up and down, experiencing everything, which was necessary for my growth. I had more time to refine my skills than most players,” Abhishek explained.

“This feels like just the beginning for our team, with plenty more to achieve,” Abhishek continued.

His current perspective is also shaped by Suryakumar’s leadership. Abhishek noted how Suryakumar’s attitude remains unchanged regardless of performance, which has inspired him.

“Since joining the team, whether he scores a century or gets out early, Suryakumar maintains the same demeanor and unites everyone. This quality is something I admire and wish to emulate, especially in the fluctuating nature of T20 cricket,” Abhishek concluded.
