Sunrisers Eastern Cape Clinches Third SA20 Title in a Four-Year Dominance Over Pretoria Capitals.
Dewald Brevis’ impressive century couldn’t secure a win as Sunrisers Eastern Cape mounted a comeback to clinch their third SA20 title in the fourth edition’s final at Newlands, Cape Town, on Sunday.
Captain Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke formed an unbeaten 114-run partnership off just 65 balls, leading their team to victory with four deliveries to spare after Brevis’ hundred had guided the Capitals to a total of 158.
The Capitals, having been asked to bat first, faced early setbacks with Connor Esterhuizen and Shai Hope being dismissed within the initial seven balls. Bryce Parsons and Brevis then stabilized the innings with a significant 96-run partnership. Following Parsons’ dismissal, Brevis received little support from his teammates, but he persevered to achieve a competitive score single-handedly.
Brevis smashed eight fours and seven sixes during his 56-ball 101 before being dismissed in the penultimate over.
In response, Lungi Ngidi quickly struck, removing Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck, leaving the Sunrisers struggling at 48 for 4 in 8.4 overs. Stubbs arrived and, after a period of careful consolidation, he and Breetzke amassed 59 runs in the final four overs to deliver a thrilling victory.
