Sunil Joshi has resigned from his position with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The ex-India spinner, who was part of Ricky Ponting’s support team at Punjab, informed the franchise of his decision to step down on Sunday.
Reports suggest Joshi is likely to take up a role at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), specifically at its Centre of Excellence (CoE) located in Bengaluru, where he would be focusing on spin bowling coaching.
The news has been confirmed by a Punjab Kings representative. “He has informed us about his inability to be available for the upcoming season. We have a positive relationship with him and acknowledge his choice to pursue career advancement,” the official shared with Cricbuzz.
At 55, Joshi is believed to have also communicated with Ponting concerning his decision. While Ponting’s direct comment was unavailable, sources indicate that he respected Joshi’s choice, understanding the career potential at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
Joshi had previous stints with the Punjab Kings under head coach Anil Kumble from 2020 to 2022 before departing to serve as the chief selector and later as a selector at the BCCI. Additionally, he briefly coached the Uttar Pradesh State cricket team.
Joshi’s cricket career includes 15 Test matches and 69 ODIs between 1996 and 2001. He has yet to provide formal confirmation on his upcoming professional pursuits.
