South Africa Faces T20 World Cup Setback with Stubbs and Rickelton as Injury Replacements
Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs were announced on Thursday as the replacements for the injured Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira in South Africa’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
De Zorzi sustained a right hamstring tear during South Africa’s India tour late last year, while Ferreira suffered an injury in the current SA20 tournament.
Both De Zorzi and Ferreira are also unavailable for the Proteas’ three-match home T20I series against the West Indies. Additionally, the team faces uncertainty over David Miller’s participation in the ICC event.
“De Zorzi has not shown the expected progress in rehabilitating from the right hamstring tear he sustained during the One-Day International series against India last month,” Cricket South Africa (CSA) stated on X. “He will not be fit for the upcoming T20I series or the T20 World Cup. Ferreira, on the other hand, fractured his left clavicle during the SA20 match between Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals on 17 January. Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been selected as their replacements in the 15-member squad,” CSA added.
Miller has also been ruled out of the SA20 knockouts due to an adductor muscle injury he suffered on Monday (January 19) while playing for Paarl Royals.
Rubin Hermann will replace Miller for the series against the West Indies.
“Miller’s participation in the T20 World Cup will depend on the results of a fitness test before the tournament,” CSA concluded.
