Smith’s Spin Stars Propel England to Dominant ODI Victory Over South Africa
Before the South Africans could comprehend the situation, their innings came to an abrupt end after just 20.4 overs, managing to score only 69 runs. The English women chased down this modest target in just 14.1 overs, starting their World Cup campaign with an impressive 10-wicket victory. This not only marked a strong opening but also sent a clear warning to tournament favorites Australia and India.
The day unfolded perfectly for England. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and opted to bowl, selecting three spinners who quickly made an impact.
Linsey Smith was introduced to the attack in the second over and immediately made a difference. With her second delivery, the left-arm bowler dismissed South African captain and top batter Laura Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt edged an attempted drive and Smith took a return catch, breaking the formidable South African opening partnership.
Soon after, Smith struck again, bowling Tazmin Brits with the first ball of her second over. Brits had entered the match in strong form, having scored centuries in her last three ODIs.
In the subsequent over, Lauren Bell clean-bowled Sune Luus. In another over, Marizanne Kapp was caught defenseless as Smith beat her bat. South Africa found themselves struggling at 19 for four.
It was a dream spell for Smith, who had only made her ODI debut four months prior. She received strong support from her teammates, with Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, and Charlie Dean each taking two wickets. The only South African player to reach double figures was wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta, scoring 22 runs off 36 balls.
England openers Tammy Beaumont (21 not out) and Amy Jones (40 not out off 50 balls, with six fours) comfortably led their team to victory. Remarkably, a T20 match would have lasted longer than this fixture.
