Shubman Gill Appointed as India’s New ODI Captain, Succeeding Rohit Sharma

Shubman Gill Takes the Helm as India's New ODI Captain, Followed by Rohit Sharma's Tenure

Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India’s ODI team, succeeding Rohit Sharma. He will lead the team in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia, marking his debut as the ODI captain. Previously, Gill has led the Test and T20I sides. This strategic shift aims to prepare for the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.

In addition to the captaincy change, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the subsequent five-match T20I series. The squad closely resembles the one that recently participated in the Asia Cup. Despite being relieved of his captaincy duties, Rohit Sharma remains part of the ODI squad alongside veteran batter Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer has been chosen as the vice-captain.

At 26 years old, Gill has limited experience in leading teams in 50-over cricket. He has captained in List-A cricket six times, boasting a win-loss record of 5:1. Earlier this year, he was named Test captain and managed a 2-2 series draw against England. Recently, under his leadership, India secured a comprehensive innings victory against the West Indies.

Gill has an impressive record in ODIs, having played 55 matches and scoring 2775 runs, including eight centuries. The 15-member ODI squad also includes KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel, with all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel forming the core. The bowling lineup features pacers Mohammad Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana, with Kuldeep Yadav providing left-arm wrist spin.

Noteworthy absences from the Champions Trophy 2025 squad include Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, and Rishabh Pant, the latter two due to injuries. Jasprit Bumrah is being rested for the ODI series.

In the T20I squad, Hardik Pandya is again unavailable due to injury, having missed the Asia Cup final after an incident in the Super Fours game against Sri Lanka. Nitish Kumar Reddy takes his place, with Washington Sundar included as well. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the team, while Gill serves as vice-captain.

India’s series against Australia will begin with three ODIs from October 19 to 25, followed by five T20Is from October 29 to November 8.
