Shafali Verma Steps Up: Approved as Injury Replacement for Pratika Rawal in Women’s World Cup 2025

Shafali Verma Joins Squad as Key Replacement for Injured Pratika Rawal in Women's World Cup 2025

Shafali Verma, the dynamic opening batter, has been drafted in as an injury replacement for Pratika Rawal ahead of India’s Women’s ODI World Cup semifinal against Australia, scheduled to take place on Thursday. Pratika was forced out of the tournament due to a right ankle injury, sustained during a rain-affected match against Bangladesh at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Sunday.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Shafali’s inclusion via a media release after Pratika’s injury was assessed as serious on Monday morning. It became clear that either standby player Tejal Hasabnis or Shafali would be incorporated into the squad for the upcoming clash at the same stadium.

According to sources, the newly formed selection panel, led by Amita Sharma, chose Shafali in collaboration with the team’s management. The decision was driven by a desire to add top-order aggression against Australia’s formidable bowling line-up.

Pratika expressed her disappointment over the injury on social media, stating, “Tough to sit out due to injury, but my heart is with the team. Best of luck, India!”

Previously omitted from the original squad by the Neetu David-led committee, Shafali’s recall is noteworthy. She was in Surat participating in the Women’s T20 Trophy representing Haryana when she received the call and later joined the national team.

Pratika’s absence marks a significant setback for India’s campaign, as she has been instrumental in the team’s progress, scoring 308 runs in six innings, making her the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer. Her successful partnership with Smriti Mandhana helped secure India’s place in the semifinals.

The injury occurred in Bangladesh’s 21st over when Pratika slipped on the damp outfield while attempting to prevent additional runs, consequently twisting her ankle and injuring her knee. Even though a stretcher was called for, she managed to leave the field with assistance from her teammates.
