Scotland Set to Replace Bangladesh in T20 World Cup 2026 Following ICC Decision

Scotland to Step Up as Bangladesh's Replacement in 2026 T20 World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that it has accepted the ICC’s decision to replace the Bangladesh national team with Scotland in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The BCB made this concession after acknowledging there was little else it could do under the circumstances.

This change came about because Bangladesh maintained its position that traveling to India for the event was unsafe, despite an independent security assessment that found no specific threats. Amjad Hossain, chairman of the BCB media committee, expressed that the Board had done its utmost but acknowledged that the ICC was not inclined to accommodate Bangladesh’s requests, leaving them with limited options.

“We have put forth our best efforts. We fully respect the ICC Board’s decision, which pointed out that the match cannot be relocated,” stated Hossain.

The BCB sought to have their matches moved to Sri Lanka or to shift from Group C to Group B, but both proposals were denied by the ICC. Hossain emphasized that the BCB respects the majority ruling of the ICC Board, even if it did not align with their preferences.

“In light of the government’s stance that it is unsafe for us to participate in the World Cup in India, we explored alternative solutions. However, since the ICC did not agree to relocating our match to Sri Lanka, and the government advises against going to India, we find ourselves unable to proceed,” Hossain explained.

The BCB decided not to pursue any separate arbitration or additional processes following the ICC’s decision.

The issue also highlights regional tensions, as Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 remains uncertain following Bangladesh’s exclusion, as noted by PCB chairman Naqvi.

This situation underscores the complex intersection of sports and international relations impacting major global tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
