Revived and Ready: Lyon Set for a Fiery Comeback in Ashes 2025-26

Smith Clarifies: Lyon’s Omission Driven by Strategy, Not Sentiment

Nathan Lyon expressed his displeasure at being omitted from a home Test in Brisbane two weeks ago, marking the first time in 14 years. However, the Australian spinner is focusing on the future as he prepares for the third Test at a familiar venue.

The 38-year-old and captain Pat Cummins are anticipated to rejoin the team on Wednesday at Adelaide Oval, where Lyon previously worked with the ground staff prior to becoming Australia’s premier Test off-spinner.

“I want to be involved in every Test match because I love playing cricket,” Lyon told reporters after being honored on the stadium’s “Avenue of Honour” on Monday. “I was very disappointed, but there’s no use dwelling on it. We’re moving forward and focusing on my role this week.”

With Australia leading the series 2-0, Lyon aims to contribute more as he has only bowled two overs so far. He is eager to rectify this at a pitch where he has claimed 63 Test wickets.

Meanwhile, England has made one change, with Tongue replacing Atkinson.

“I haven’t really had the chance to immerse myself in this Test series yet, but I hope that opportunity arises soon,” Lyon added.

Damian Hough, the head groundsman at Adelaide Oval, mentioned that the pitch he prepared might be advantageous for Lyon. “Spin has always played a role here,” Hough remarked on Monday. “Even last year, I felt the pitch was conducive to spin, even if Lyon didn’t bowl much.”

Lyon has paused at 562 wickets, just one short of Glenn McGrath’s total on the list of top Australian Test wicket-takers. Despite being in his late 30s, Lyon has no plans to retire soon and feels his record stands strong.

“I’ve played 140 Test matches. I don’t need to prove my point to anyone,” Lyon stated. “I’m very clear about my role on this team. I love playing with everyone and representing Australia.”

“If given the chance again, I’ll seize it. My dream is to keep playing cricket for Australia.”
