Rain Reigns Supreme: Colombo ODI World Cup Clash Drenched
Players gazing out from the dressing room had sadly become a common sight during the last six Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 games at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The scenario didn’t change during the final match in Colombo, featuring host Sri Lanka against Pakistan. The game faced a rocky start as rain swept the field just 10 minutes before the toss, foreshadowing yet another day of delays and uncertainty.
Amidst efforts from the diligent ground staff and brief spells of clear skies, play resumed after over three hours. However, the game lasted just 4.2 overs, marking this as the fourth match affected by rain out of the last six at this venue.
Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu, choosing to bowl first, expressed confidence in her bowling lineup, which now included young Dewmi Vihanga. Pakistan also introduced young talents, Eyman Fatima and debutant Syeda Aroob Shah. The Sri Lankan bowlers, Malki Madara and Sugandika Kumari, delivered economically, restricting Pakistan openers Omaima Sohail and Muneeba Ali to a single boundary and 18 runs before rain intervened once more.
Despite the disappointing disruptions, there were moments when a moderately sized audience cheered on the home team’s improved fielding efforts and eagerly watched the rare moment of the Lankan players in action.
Throughout, the crowd remained hopeful under overcast skies, encouraged by lively band music, only to see the match slip away once again.
With the no-result, Pakistan concluded its campaign winless but garnered three points from washouts. Sri Lanka, with only one win, ended with five points, leaving them hopeful for more but accepting the outcome.
