Perth Scorchers Clinch Historic Sixth BBL Title with Triumph Over Sydney Sixers
The Perth Scorchers clinched their sixth Big Bash League (BBL) title on Sunday with a commanding six-wicket win against the Sydney Sixers in the final held at Perth Stadium.
After securing the right to host by defeating the Sixers in a qualifier the previous week, the Scorchers opted to bowl first and dismissed their recurring Grand Final adversaries for a meager total of 132 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Pacers David Payne and Jhye Richardson played pivotal roles, sharing six wickets between them.
In their chase, the Scorchers comfortably reached 133 for four with 15 balls to spare, thanks to a steady 44 from 43 balls by Mitchell Marsh.
“Ashton Turner, the Scorchers captain, expressed his relief, saying, “It feels like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. We have high expectations, and to be able to meet those is really satisfying.”
The Scorchers began their pursuit on an aggressive note when Marsh, who is also Australia’s T20 captain, hit the first ball for six. Finn Allen, who was the top run-scorer of the season with 466 runs, thrilled the crowd by hitting a scooped six into the second tier in a 19-run fourth over against quick Mitchell Starc.
Despite some rain concerns, the Scorchers maintained a rapid pace of nearly 10 runs an over. Jack Edwards’ spectacular one-handed catch off Starc eventually dismissed Allen for 36. Seamer Sean Abbott managed to take down Aaron Hardie (5) and Marsh, but Josh Inglis remained unbeaten on 29 and sealed the victory with a majestic six over long-off.
Earlier, the Perth audience of 55,018 witnessed the departure of Sixers’ star player Steve Smith for 24 runs, after all-rounder Hardie’s successful lbw review. Smith had an impressive tournament, averaging 60 with a strike rate of 168, but remains out of T20 World Cup considerations.
Moises Henriques was fortunate to survive three missed run-out opportunities within five balls, but was later caught for 24 off Payne’s medium pace, who finished with an impressive three for 18. Fast bowler Mahli Beardman, who is close to international selection, concluded the innings with two wickets and a run out in the final over.
Reflecting on the defeat, Henriques said, “It hurts. We really wanted to come here and keep this Perth crowd relatively quiet. Unfortunately, we weren’t good enough tonight.”
The Australian squad will soon travel to Pakistan for three T20 matches in preparation for their first T20 World Cup game against Ireland in Colombo on February 11.
