Pakistan Clinches Nail-Biting Victory Over South Africa in ODI Opener
Salman Ali Agha played a crucial role in Pakistan’s thrilling last-over win against South Africa in the opening match of the three One-Day Internationals in Faisalabad on Tuesday.
Salman contributed 62 runs to help Pakistan secure a two-wicket victory with just two balls to spare, as they successfully chased a target of 264 runs.
After opting to field first, Pakistan watched as South Africa’s openers established a solid 98-run partnership. Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius impressed on his ODI debut with 57 runs off 60 balls before being expertly caught at point. Quinton de Kock, making his return to the ODI format after two years, top-scored for South Africa with 63 runs. Corbin Bosch added a quick 41 in the final overs, though the visitors were ultimately dismissed for 263 with five balls left in their innings.
Fakhar Zaman (45) and Saim Ayub (39) gave Pakistan a strong 87-run start in their chase. Later, Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 and formed a crucial 91-run fourth-wicket stand with Salman. Although Pakistan appeared on track for victory, they experienced a brief setback, losing three wickets in swift succession. However, new captain Shaheen Shah Afridi remained unbeaten to guide the team to victory.
The two sides will face off again at Iqbal Stadium, which is hosting international cricket for the first time in 17 years, on Thursday.
