India plans to maintain their current team lineup for the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi, despite the “dry and patchy” pitch expected. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate emphasized the importance of developing a seam-bowling allrounder for greater balance, especially during overseas tours. This strategy is why the team is consistent with the lineup from the pace-oriented Ahmedabad Test.

Ten Doeschate remarked, “The pitch looks dry and patchy, not necessarily favorable for seam bowlers. We plan to stick with our current combination. Our medium-term goal is to nurture a seam-bowling all-rounder, critical for overseas tours. Last week, Nitish had limited play; thus, we’ll give him another chance without altering team balance.”

Nitish did not bat in the first Test and bowled four overs. The second Test offers more opportunities to evaluate his potential, though fitness remains a crucial factor in his development as an allrounder.

Ten Doeschate shared, “Nitish is an excellent seam-bowling allrounder with potential. However, his physical fitness will determine his success. This aspect affects players like Hardik too. Their skills are undeniable, but durability in Test cricket is different.”

Nitish’s batting potential is evident from his performances in Australia. A continuous series will provide him opportunities to hone his bowling skills. “His development is crucial, and the team structure supports diverse batting capabilities between 5 to 8 positions,” said ten Doeschate.

Discussion ensued regarding Nitish’s No. 8 batting position. Ten Doeschate noted that the flexible middle order offers room for versatility and competition.

The assistant coach added, “Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel offer similar batting flexibility from positions 5 to 8. After injury, Nitish returned to bat at No. 8, but we aim to provide everyone chances to adapt to various roles.”

While Nitish acclimates to the allrounder role, Sai Sudharsan is working to solidify his spot in India’s top order. Despite a mixed Test start, he shows promise and is backed to perform well. He reacquired the No. 3 position, and the management trusts him to seize this opportunity fully.

“Sai faces competition but has our full confidence,” stated ten Doeschate. “He just needs to focus on his game. He’s capable, and a winning team environment allows for growth without panic.”

This series against the West Indies, after a challenging tour of England, offers Sai a steady platform. Despite scheduling interruptions, he’s guaranteed two Tests to demonstrate his capabilities.

“Five Tests in the UK followed by a pause before these Tests require adjustments,” noted ten Doeschate. “But that’s the current Test cricket structure, and Sai must learn to navigate it. We fully support him, and he’s poised to achieve great results soon.”

Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel’s consistency, demonstrated by a century in the first Test, adds competition for middle-order positions. Ten Doeschate expects Sai to meet this challenge head-on.

He concluded, “Dhruv’s performance is a testament to India’s cricketing talent depth. Players like Sai are intended to withstand competitive and media pressures, and showcase their full potential.”
