New Zealand’s Young Aims for Another Series Victory in India
Will Young, recently honored as Player of the Series for his exceptional batting during New Zealand’s historic Test series whitewash in India late in 2024, finds himself back in familiar cricketing territory.
This time, however, the focus shifts to limited-overs cricket. Young is optimistic that a refreshed New Zealand team can once again achieve remarkable feats.
New Zealand’s 3-0 Test series victory — marking the first instance of India being whitewashed in a home three-Test series — stands as one of the most extraordinary achievements in recent cricket history. As the Black Caps prepare for an upcoming three-match ODI series, Young highlighted that the memories of this triumph continue to inspire the team.
“While it’s a different format compared to our last tour here, the Black Caps have delivered impressive one-day performances at home against England and the West Indies,” Young stated on Friday at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium. “Coming to India with a slightly revamped team is a fantastic opportunity. Our dream is to secure another series victory here.”
A senior figure in the touring squad, Young considers the 2024 series win — along with his Player of the Series accolade — a pivotal moment in his career. “That series ranks at the top for me,” he said, reflecting on the importance of excelling in Indian conditions against such a formidable adversary.

Young did note that the significance of the ODI series might be overshadowed by the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to commence in just four weeks. “With the T20 World Cup approaching, it’s easy for a series like this to be overlooked,” he said.
Despite this, the 31-year-old stressed the importance of staying grounded. “Cricket teaches you to remain present. That’s exactly what this series is about — engaging fully against an exceptional Indian team,” he expressed. “Opportunities like this are rare, so we’re thrilled by the challenge.”
For New Zealand, the short-term aim may be preparation, but the belief — bolstered by past successes — remains strong.
