New Zealand Seeks Redemption Against Spirited Bangladesh in Women’s ODI World Cup Clash
New Zealand, still in search of their first win in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, is set to face a confident Bangladesh team on Friday at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Despite a few raindrops falling at the venue the day before the match, the forecast suggests that the game should proceed, though likely with a sparse crowd in attendance.
The two teams have competed four times so far, all during 2022. The White Ferns emerged victorious in two of those encounters, while the other two matches were abandoned due to weather. Among their previous meetings is a World Cup game where Suzie Bates’ unbeaten half-century led New Zealand to a comfortable nine-wicket triumph.
Bates’ recent form, however, is a cause for concern as she has not yet scored in this tournament. New Zealand’s batting lineup has heavily relied on Sophie Devine, whose standout performances — including a century against Australia and 85 against South Africa — were not enough to secure wins.
With spin-friendly conditions expected, Amelia Kerr and Eden Carson are primed to challenge Bangladesh’s already struggling batting order, which has similarly relied on individual contributions.
For Bangladesh, players like Sobhana Mostary and lower-order batter Rabeya Khan showed resilience by achieving a competitive score against England at the same venue. This followed Rubya Haider’s maiden ODI fifty that propelled them to victory over Pakistan in Colombo.
Bangladesh is hopeful for quick wickets, relying on spinner and pacer Marufa Akter. Despite being unable to finish her 10 overs in the last match due to cramps, Marufa practiced at the nets on Thursday. After a discussion with head coach Sarwar Imran, she was advised to rest and prepare for the upcoming match against New Zealand.
