Neutralize Bumrah’s Firepower to Set the Stage Against India’s Spin

Counter Bumrah's Blaze to Pave the Way for Tackling India's Spin

Graeme Smith, having extensive cricket experience in the sub-continent, offers key insights as South Africa prepares for its two-Test series against India starting Friday in Kolkata. His advice to the visiting team is to handle Jasprit Bumrah’s opening spells effectively before contending with the Indian spinners.

“Starting solidly with a top three that can set a foundation is vital. Falling two or three wickets early and then facing the spinners can be detrimental. Counteracting Bumrah initially, and also Kagiso Rabada for India, is crucial as they are exceptional bowlers with impressive Test records,” Smith mentioned during the SA20 Media Day.

Smith acknowledges that although Bumrah and Rabada will play significant roles, Indian spinners will eventually challenge the visitors. “Preparing for spin is often underestimated but essential in the subcontinent, and the South African team understands this,” he noted.

South Africa boasts a strong spin attack with Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, and Senuran Muthusamy, which Smith believes is a robust bowling unit capable of testing India.

Smith added, “Our bowling, particularly spin with Maharaj and Harmer, is potent. They can control games and their spin ability is crucial for taking wickets. It’ll be interesting to see how Rabada and the others manage reverse swing.”

Participation in the A-series against India has equipped the South African team for these conditions, according to Smith. “Many players have prior experience in the subcontinent. It’s crucial to adapt both gameplay and mindset to excel here.”

Kolkata, known for being a favorable batting venue, will motivate the South African team to perform well. As Smith, now the league commissioner, emphasized, starting the series on a strong note is pivotal.
