Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach, Mushtaq Ahmed, expressed his concerns on Monday, September 15, about the team’s middle-over batting performance as they prepare for a do-or-die Asia Cup T20 encounter against Afghanistan. The match is set to take place at the Abu Jayed Cricket Stadium on September 16.

Afghanistan’s strong suit is their impressive spin lineup, featuring captain Rashid Khan, seasoned player Mohammad Nabi, left-arm prodigy Noor Ahmad, and upcoming talent AM Ghazanfar. This diverse attack is particularly suited to the UAE conditions.

“Afghanistan’s spin attack poses the biggest threat, especially during the middle overs. Our chance to put up a competitive score depends on how well we handle that phase. We have a strong bowling lineup too, so overcoming the middle-over challenge is critical,” Mushtaq commented.

A loss on Tuesday would eliminate Bangladesh from the competition, while a victory would still leave their fate dependent on other results. However, with two wins in their last three encounters with Afghanistan, Bangladesh can draw confidence, as emphasized by Mushtaq’s call for belief in their ability to advance.

“We must believe in our ability to qualify. It’s difficult when outcomes hinge on variables, but the focus should be on securing a win in the next match,” Mushtaq remarked.

“Setbacks, such as losing quick wickets, are inevitable. The batsmen need to move on swiftly instead of dwelling on past errors. Our role as coaches is to help them maintain confidence and optimism,” Mushtaq added.

Mushtaq addressed Rishad Hossain’s struggles, advising the young leg-spinner to simplify his strategy. “Young spinners often lose consistency when attempting too many variations early on. I spoke with Rishad today, reminding him to focus initially on delivering consistent good balls before introducing variations,” Mushtaq said.

He elaborated, “Rishad must learn to deliver the first three balls confidently to establish his rhythm. He must also adapt his bowling strategy to the match situation, which is crucial.”

“As a spin-bowling coach, my advice is to adhere to your regimen. By understanding conditions and maintaining accuracy, success follows. A well-executed delivery challenges any batsman and builds momentum, a lesson I continually reinforce with Rishad in practice,” he elaborated.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, noted the team’s advantage in having a short respite following their victory over Hong Kong.

“Starting a tournament can induce nervousness, so winning the initial game was important. Given our hectic schedule before that, the break was beneficial before the crucial match tomorrow,” Trott explained.

“We’ve had several encounters with Bangladesh, and they’ve always been competitive. We’re looking forward to a challenging match and aim to finish on the winning side,” he continued.

“Facing Bangladesh is always a test given their match-winning capabilities. The break has refreshed us mentally and physically, especially in these conditions, allowing us to recharge ahead of what we hope is an intensive next stage. If we perform well tomorrow, the schedule will have been advantageous,” Trott concluded.
