Mumbai Indians Enlist Kristen Beams as New Spin Maestro
Mumbai Indians (MI), the defending champions of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), have appointed former Australian leg-spinner Kristen Beams as their spin-bowling coach for the upcoming season.
The 41-year-old Beams played for Australia across all three formats from 2014 to 2017. She will work alongside head coach Lisa Keightley, bowling coach and mentor Jhulan Goswami, batting coach Devika Palshikar, and fielding coach Nicole Bolton in the MI support team.
During her playing career, Beams participated in one Test, 30 ODIs, and 18 T20Is for Australia, and also played for the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) from the 2015-16 season until 2019-20.
Following her playing days, she transitioned into coaching roles within the WBBL, The Hundred, and the Australia Under-19 women’s team.
In an Instagram post for MI, Beams expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s an incredible opportunity to work with someone like Jhulan Goswami, one of the greats of the game, somebody I played cricket against.”
“[It’s an] incredible culture…they’ve developed a winning culture over a really long period of time, but a family—that’s what you hear everyone talk about, that this group is so tight-knit, and it’s a family, and it’s what you want to be a part of. And I think as a coach coming in, that’s exactly what you want to be able to do—to walk into an environment that feels really tight-knit and a team that knows how to win,” she added after joining the two-time WPL champions.
