Mitchell Commends New Zealand’s Composure in Landmark ODI Series Triumph

Mitchell Applauds New Zealand's Poise in Historic ODI Series Victory

Daryl Mitchell attributes New Zealand’s historic victory to calm decision-making under pressure and a strong collective belief. This marks their first-ever bilateral ODI series win on Indian soil.

India appeared poised to chase down a daunting 338-run target, thanks to a crucial partnership between centurion Virat Kohli and Harshit Rana. However, their momentum faltered once the partnership was broken in the decisive third game on Sunday.

Mitchell acknowledged the intense pressure but commended his team’s composure.

“They had a really solid partnership, and the pressure was immense, especially given the nature of the ground, pitch, and its dimensions,” said Mitchell, who scored 137.

“I was incredibly proud of how calm the team remained and how clear our strategies were throughout,” he added. Describing the decider as a fitting contest, he continued, “It was an excellent game of cricket to come down to the wire. Both teams should be proud of their performance.” Reflecting on the significance of the victory, Mitchell emphasized its special importance.

“Many New Zealand teams have toured India, learning and growing with each visit. Achieving this feat with our current group is something we’re immensely proud of. There will be plenty of smiles as we head home.” When asked to compare the ODI series win to New Zealand’s recent Test series success in India, Mitchell said both accomplishments reflect the team’s development.

“Defeating India here is always a challenge, in any format, making this victory even more special for New Zealand cricket.” Mitchell also expressed appreciation for the experience of playing in front of Indian fans.

“We’re used to smaller crowds in New Zealand, and the enthusiastic noise here is truly special. It’s amazing to be part of it,” he said with a smile.

Having enjoyed consistent success in Indian conditions, Mitchell credited his IPL experience for aiding his adaptation.

“I’m grateful for my time with teams in Chennai and Rajasthan. I hope to return here more often. Touring India is a fantastic experience, especially playing in front of these passionate fans.” However, he highlighted the importance of New Zealand’s preparation at home as well.

“We spent considerable time preparing in Lincoln and at Mount Maunganui. International cricket exposes you to various surfaces and scoring strategies. We’re fortunate to have good preparation facilities and supportive groundsmen back home.” Mitchell praised Indian wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, despite New Zealand’s aggressive approach against him.

“Kuldeep is world-class. There’s a reason we try to put him under pressure—when he’s in form, he anchors their bowling attack. He can spin the ball both ways and surely has a significant role for India ahead.” Regarding India’s choice to bowl first in the series decider, Mitchell remarked the decision was understandable.

“We would have potentially done the same. Dew can become a challenge later in the game. As visitors, we’re not as familiar with the conditions, so it’s about making informed guesses and team decisions.” On his crucial partnership with Glenn Phillips (106) following early wickets, Mitchell noted they complemented each other effectively.

“With Glenn, we have varying angles, making us a good partnership. He’s incredibly fast, and my challenge was keeping pace with him,” Mitchell commented.

“After losing a few wickets early, our focus shifted to building a strong partnership and shifting pressure back on them.” He expressed particular satisfaction at seeing Phillips return strongly after an injury spell.

“He’s been sidelined for a while, so it was fantastic to watch him perform like that,” he concluded.
