Missing 2025 Asia Cup Final, But Gaining Long-Term Insights: Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya's Strategic Trade-Off: Missing the 2025 Asia Cup for Future Gains

Hardik Pandya was understandably disappointed about missing the 2025 Asia Cup final against Pakistan due to a minor injury, but he found solace in the team’s victory, believing that such close matches will benefit the team in the future.

India successfully chased the target of 147 set by Pakistan, securing their ninth Asia Cup title on Sunday. “Missing the crucial match was tough, but the team’s performance was exceptional. They demonstrated immense character,” Pandya said in a BCCI video.

“These types of games are pivotal for us in the long run, especially when we’re tested and under pressure. The composure we showed was remarkable,” he added.

Pandya noted that the Indian team is quickly learning to adapt to various situations and conditions. “T20 cricket demands assertiveness and adaptability, and this team is learning just that,” he remarked.

He also praised opener Abhishek Sharma for his explosive start that set the tone for the match. “Abhishek’s fearless play was outstanding — he essentially won half the game for us during the Power Play,” he said.

While Pandya’s performance in the Asia Cup was not notable, taking only four wickets in six matches with an economy rate of 8.57, he enjoyed the challenge of managing new ball duties alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

“I’ve always enjoyed taking on different roles, and handling the new ball was no exception. Batting remains a focus when needed, as it’s how I prefer to play,” he said.

“Bowling has been my top priority for quite some time. If I’m bowling, then batting doesn’t concern me. I consider myself a dedicated fast bowler, and it requires a great deal of hard work and discipline, which I greatly enjoy,” he added.

Pandya emphasized that bowling is a personal choice rather than a routine task. “I used to exaggerate its significance, but I’ve learned that if you treat it as a monumental task, motivation wanes over time. Integrating it into my life as a personal choice has been wonderful, despite yesterday’s unfortunate event,” he concluded.
