McCullum Confesses: England’s Ashes Form Falls Short in 2025-26

McCullum Admits: England's Ashes Performance Misses the Mark in 2025-26

England coach Brendon McCullum confidently dismissed concerns on Sunday regarding his job security ahead of the third Test against Australia, despite acknowledging that the team has not performed up to its potential. Following defeats in the first two Ashes Tests in Perth and Brisbane, where England lost by eight wickets, a victory at Adelaide Oval this week is crucial to keep the five-match series competitive.

McCullum stated the team would maintain its current top seven lineup, including Ollie Pope at number three, rather than bringing in Jacob Bethell. He emphasized the importance of stability, saying, “Knee-jerk reactions and chopping and changing settled batting line-ups is not really our way.”

England’s lackluster performance and questionable preparation methods have faced criticism, particularly McCullum’s remark that they “trained too much” ahead of the Brisbane match, which surprised many former cricketing legends. Additionally, the team’s choice to relax on the beach at the tourist hotspot Noosa before heading to Adelaide also drew criticism.

Unperturbed by the potential threat to his position, McCullum remarked, “I don’t know, but it doesn’t really bother me, to be honest. Professional sport isn’t easy. You do the job to the best of your ability with conviction in your strategy, and whatever happens, happens.”

Although acknowledging the need for improvement to remain in the series, McCullum insisted on maintaining the team’s aggressive approach. “We knew when we came here that we had to win three Tests to win the series. Being 2-0 down makes it harder, but it doesn’t diminish the belief within the team,” he stated. “I firmly believe that if we play our best cricket, we have a strong chance in this Test match. Achieving that alters the series narrative.”

McCullum also defended the team’s decision to opt for a beach break rather than training post-defeats, noting, “Noosa for us was excellent. It was planned a year ago to provide a break from the intense environment.” He expressed hope that the break would rejuvenate the team, adding, “There’s no guarantees, but that’s the plan. The boys are excited to return to training and look forward to the upcoming days.”
