MCC Validates Muneeba’s Run Out Decision in World Cup Thriller Against India

Cricket MCC Backs Muneeba's Controversial Run Out Call in Epic World Cup Clash with India

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced on Monday that the decision to declare Pakistan’s Muneeba Ali run out in the 2025 Women’s World Cup match against India was completely in line with cricket regulations.

The incident occurred during the fourth over of Pakistan’s innings when Deepti Sharma hit the stumps with the ball immediately following an unsuccessful LBW appeal, with Muneeba standing outside her crease.

There was debate over whether the ball was still active after the appeal and whether Muneeba could be run out if she was not attempting a run.

MCC clarified on its website, “There are several Laws to consider. The simplest is that, despite the loud LBW appeal, the ball had not become Dead. The appeal being answered as Not Out, coupled with the ball not being finally settled with the wicketkeeper, and Deepti’s action showing that not all players considered it Dead, means the ball remains in play.”

According to Law 30.1.2, a batter is not out if their bat or body loses contact with the ground after grounding it beyond the crease. However, MCC noted that this rule did not apply here since Muneeba was not ‘running or diving’ towards the crease.

The statement explained, “She had positioned herself beyond the popping crease and her feet never returned to her ground.”

The MCC further clarified that the dismissal should be classified as a run out rather than stumped, because the stumps were “not broken by the wicketkeeper without interference from another fielder – instead, it was a fielder who made the throw.”
