On Saturday, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honored Jay Shah, Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), for his remarkable contributions to expanding cricket’s reach globally. This event, hosted at a gala dinner in Mumbai, took place just before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Annual General Meeting set for September 28.
In the past ten years, Shah has been instrumental in shaping cricket’s trajectory. His initiatives have bolstered domestic structures, enriched the Indian Premier League (IPL), and introduced reforms elevating women’s cricket. Notably, his leadership has resulted in substantial increases in prize money for women’s tournaments, highlighting the importance of parity and recognition for female athletes.
The upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, commencing on September 30, exemplifies these initiatives. This edition is poised to be the largest yet, with greater global participation, unprecedented broadcast reach, and the highest prize pool in women’s cricket history.
Ajinkya Naik, president of the MCA, remarked, “Mr. Jay Shah’s extraordinary commitment to cricket at every level is inspirational. His reforms, particularly in women’s cricket, have unlocked opportunities and ignited inspiration globally. As the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 approaches, it is fitting to honor his transformative leadership and vision.”
