Leeds Phoenix: Igniting the Hundred with Passion and Power
The Northern Superchargers, a team in The Hundred cricket tournament, has been rebranded as Sunrisers Leeds as of Monday. The Sun Group, the owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Sunrisers Hyderabad, acquired full ownership of the Yorkshire-based franchise in February of the previous year.
In a video announcement shared on social media through the franchise’s official account, they stated, “A new era begins. SunRisers is not just a team, it’s a family, an emotion, and a passion.”
A tweet from the newly branded Sunrisers Leeds read, “A new Sun rises with the same 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄 🔥 Orange Army of Headingley, welcome your team – Sunrisers Leeds 🧡.” The tweet included references to the official handles of The Hundred and Play With Fire.
Kavya Maran, the franchise owner, expressed, “The Orange Army has always shown up in great numbers and with pure passion, from India to South Africa. It’s time to paint Headingley orange. We’re ready to go hard and fearless. We’re ready to play with fire. The team is yours, Orange Army. Every wicket, run, and record is for you.”
The Sun Group also owns the Sunrisers Eastern Cape team in SA20, South Africa’s franchise T20 tournament.
The Hundred has seen considerable investment from IPL franchises. The RPSG Group-owned Lucknow Super Giants acquired a 70% stake in Manchester Originals, while Reliance Industries, Mumbai Indians’ owner, holds a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles. Additionally, GMR Group, which owns Delhi Capitals, purchased a 49% stake in Southern Brave.
