Labuschagne Rallies Behind Criticized Khawaja as Crucial Brisbane Test Looms
Marnus Labuschagne has expressed his support for Usman Khawaja ahead of the second Ashes Test, stating he will maintain his position in the batting order even if Australia considers replacing the underperforming opener.
During Australia’s thrilling win over England in the first match in Perth, Khawaja was hindered by back spasms, which prevented him from starting either innings and limited him to just two runs.
Travis Head’s impressive century as Khawaja’s substitute at the top has sparked renewed discussions regarding the Australian batting lineup. However, Labuschagne was firm on Monday when questioned about offering guidance to the left-hander.
“I don’t think he needs advice,” Labuschagne said to the media at Brisbane’s Gabba, where the second Test is set to begin on Thursday. “He’s 38, he’s well-experienced…he’s an exceptional player.”
Labuschagne lauded Khawaja’s adaptability in ascending from batting at number three or four to opening the innings, praising his handling of challenging situations. “He’s been brilliant,” Labuschagne added, “and in First-Class cricket this year, he’s played beautifully. His form has been excellent.”
Interestingly, the conversation surrounding Australia’s opening pair since David Warner’s retirement has primarily centered on who should partner with Khawaja. Labuschagne and Steve Smith have temporarily filled Warner’s absence, but Labuschagne indicated that such trials might conclude. “I think we can pretty much be sure that Steve or I won’t open,” he affirmed.
Usually occupying the number three spot, Labuschagne was excluded from the Test team during the West Indies tour in June and July due to a dip in form, only to make a strong return with several centuries in domestic cricket.
In the Perth Test, Labuschagne managed nine runs in the first innings but then delivered his 24th Test half-century alongside Head to help secure an eight-wicket win for Australia. “I personally took a lot away from that,” he reflected. “Finishing the game, building that partnership with Trav, and playing some free-flowing cricket was truly rewarding.”
