Kuldeep’s Magical Spin: The Secret Behind India’s 2025 Asia Cup Triumph
For top wrist-spinners, creating the illusion of significant spin with minimal deviation is a crucial part of their art. They achieve this by blending drift, flight, and dip with slight variations in release point, enticing batsmen into their intricate trap. At his peak, Shane Warne was a master of such deception, spinning the ball prodigiously on most surfaces.
Kuldeep Yadav, in recent years, has emerged as a member of this elite group. It’s puzzling, however, why the 30-year-old from Kanpur hasn’t consistently been a fixture on the international stage. Yet, whenever he dons India’s blue or whites, he consistently takes wickets, showcasing the magic of his left-arm wrist spin.
A recent showcase was against Pakistan, who managed just 127 for nine in their Asia Cup 2025 match against India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The pitch didn’t particularly favor aggressive stroke play, and the turn was modest. Despite this, Pakistan’s batsmen struggled, retreating into defense and allowing Kuldeep to unleash his skills. This was Kuldeep’s first T20I encounter against the rival, although he boasts 15 wickets in seven ODIs against them.
In the Asia Cup, for the second consecutive match, Kuldeep was India’s standout bowler. Following a four-wicket haul in a dominant victory over the United Arab Emirates, he dismantled Pakistan’s batting with three wickets in a restrictive four-over spell.
Kuldeep’s dismissals were a testament to his craft: Hasan Nawaz’s mistimed sweep handed a catch to Axar Patel, Mohammed Nawaz was trapped leg-before by a deceptive googly, and Sahibzada Farhan edged a wider delivery to long-on.
His immediate impact in the tournament underscores his skill and maturity, especially after serving as a backup throughout India’s five-Test series against England. This match against the UAE marked his return to the T20 format since the World Cup final against South Africa in June 2024.
“Kuldeep has been part of the Test squad without game time, but his dedication to fitness and bowling is clear. Two consecutive match-winning performances affirm his hard work,” captain Suryakumar Yadav remarked post-match.
