Gavin Larsen, a former pacer, has returned as New Zealand’s selection manager, succeeding Sam Wells. Larsen previously held this position from 2015 to 2023 and recently worked as Performance Director at Warwickshire.

The 61-year-old, who recently worked with the Nelson Giants basketball team, will partner with head coach Rob Walter to select squads for New Zealand, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI tours.

“I am deeply honored to return to the BLACKCAPS and the national high-performance environment,” Larsen stated. “I am incredibly passionate about cricket in New Zealand, and having another chance to contribute at the highest level is thrilling. I am eager to begin this summer and hopefully help further the BLACKCAPS’ success.”

NZC’s Chief High Performance Officer, Daryl Gibson, highlighted Larsen’s experience and understanding of the modern game as key reasons for his appointment. “Gavin’s familiarity with the role and his comprehension of its demands were crucial,” Gibson remarked. “Additionally, his passion, energy, and desire to reengage in the game to make a difference impressed us.”

The selection model will stay the same, with Walter having the final say on selections while closely working with Larsen. The new selection manager will officially assume his role on November 3.
