Karnataka Dominates Day 1 as Padikkal and Karun Shine Against Saurashtra
A mix of youthful ambition and seasoned composure was prominently showcased as Devdutt Padikkal (96 runs off 141 balls, with 11 boundaries) and Karun Nair (73 runs off 126 balls, with 9 boundaries) joined forces to construct a pivotal 146-run partnership for the third wicket. This effort placed Karnataka in a commanding position against Saurashtra on the opening day of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season at Niranjan Shah Stadium on a Wednesday.
After choosing to bat under bright, sunny conditions, Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal and S. Nikin Jose were swiftly put under pressure by the precise lines and lengths bowled by Saurashtra’s pace attack, led by captain Jaydev Unadkat and Chetan Sakariya.
Recognizing the batsmen’s attempt to break free, Jaydev made the strategic move to introduce spin early, which proved successful. Left-arm spinner Dharmendra Jadeja struck twice, dismissing both openers—Mayank in the 10th over and Nikin in the 14th—bringing Karnataka to a precarious 26 for two.
Padikkal and Karun then took command, employing a steady approach to stabilize the innings. They efficiently rotated the strike, maintaining the scoreboard momentum. Once settled, they began scoring freely, consistently finding gaps and applying pressure back on the home side.
Padikkal made the most of short deliveries with precise cuts and powerful pulls, while Karun adeptly managed the strike, leading both to celebrate their half-centuries.
However, against the flow of the game, Dharmendra disrupted the duo’s stand by trapping Karun in front, before securing his fourth wicket by bowling out Padikkal, who narrowly missed reaching a century.
K.L. Shrijith’s time at the crease was brief, but R. Smaran (66 not out from 120 balls, with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes) and Shreyas Gopal (38 not out from 69 balls, with 2 boundaries and 2 sixes) combined for an 81-run partnership for the sixth wicket, guiding the visitors to 295 for five at the end of day one.
