Jemimah’s Heroics Propel Delhi to Victory, Intensifying WPL 2026 Playoff Battle
In today’s T20 cricket, a target of 155 is usually considered manageable for the chasing team.
On Tuesday, in the Women’s Premier League match at Kotambi Stadium, Delhi Capitals faced a challenging task against Mumbai Indians, ultimately securing a victory with seven wickets in hand and an over to spare. Key contributions came from Jemimah Rodrigues (51 not out off 37 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six) and Lizelle Lee (46 off 28 balls, with 7 fours and 1 six), overshadowing Nat Sciver-Brunt’s impressive half-century for MI.
Unlike MI’s slow start, Delhi got off to a flying start with Lee and Shafali Verma putting together a 63-run opening partnership in just 7.3 overs. They capitalized on loose deliveries, aiming for a swift finish. However, 20-year-old left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma, newly added as a replacement for the injured G. Kamalini, managed to dismiss Shafali, celebrating her success energetically.
Two quiet overs later, Lee’s stumping by Rahila Firdous off Amanjot Kaur brought controversy. Although she seemed to have her bat grounded, third umpire Ajitesh Argal judged otherwise after reviewing multiple replays, taking eight minutes to make the decision.
Jemimah and Laura Wolvaardt then built a steady partnership to edge DC closer. Another twist occurred in the 17th over when Wolvaardt was run out at the non-striker’s end by Sciver-Brunt. Jemimah remained composed during this critical moment.
Earlier in the game, Sciver-Brunt (65 not out off 45 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes) and Harmanpreet Kaur (41 off 33 balls, with 7 fours) gave MI a boost, bringing the total to 154 for five after a solid 78-run partnership. Contributions from other team members were sparse, largely due to left-arm spinner N. Shree Charani’s impressive performance. The 21-year-old dismissed Harmanpreet, Nicola Carey, and Amanjot Kaur, ending with figures of 4-0-33-3.
