Jagadeesan Takes Helm as Captain, Sudharsan Steps Up as Vice-Captain for Tamil Nadu in Vijay Hazare Trophy
N. Jagadeesan has been appointed as the captain of Tamil Nadu for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, commencing on December 24. B. Sai Sudharsan will be serving as the vice-captain. The State senior selection committee has announced a 16-member squad that introduces several new talents.
From the Under-23 team that triumphed in the BCCI one-day competition, seven players have been given their well-deserved promotions. Besides M. Boopathi Vaishna Kumar, who captained the Under-23 squad, and Mohamed Ali, others are making their debut call-ups.
The fresh faces are Sachin Rathi, pacer G. Govinth, all-rounder Sunny Sandhu, leg spinner Karthik Manikandan, and wicketkeeper S.R. Athish.
This selection has led to the exclusion of some well-known players, such as pacers Sandeep Warrier and T. Natarajan. Similarly, M. Shahrukh Khan, who was previously dropped from the T20 side midway through the tournament, is also not included.
This one-day competition holds significant importance for Tamil Nadu, which has struggled both on and off the field in domestic tournaments recently. A strong performance in this tournament is crucial to restore some pride following a challenging season for TN.
In the Ranji Trophy, Tamil Nadu is out of the qualification race, having lost two of its five matches outright and conceded the lead in two others. Their sole first-innings lead came against Nagaland, leaving them seventh on the table with five points.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, TN was unable to move past the league stage for the fourth consecutive year, securing victories in only three out of their seven matches.
In last year’s one-day competition, TN was defeated by Rajasthan in the pre-quarterfinals.
The five-time champion is placed in Elite Group A, which includes current holders Karnataka. Other teams in the group are Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Kerala, and Tripura.
