Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s participation in the IPL has sparked discussions regarding age eligibility in the tournament. Following his remarkable performance last season with the Rajasthan Royals, questions have been raised, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider its current rules.
After his impressive debut, where he showcased a dominating performance against seasoned IPL bowlers, Suryavanshi has caught the attention of cricket administrators. Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) was urged to reevaluate its age regulations for international cricket in light of his accomplishments, influencing the BCCI to reconsider its criteria this past Sunday.
At just 14 years old, Suryavanshi became a shining star in IPL 18, amassing 252 runs across seven matches, highlighted by a century and a half-century. His exploits have renewed dialogue about the league’s minimum age requirements, a topic that emerged at the BCCI AGM on Sunday, demanding clarifications from the board.
Sanjay Naik, representing the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), questioned the IPL’s policies that permitted a 14-year-old’s participation. He noted that the MCA prohibits players under 16 from participating in its T20 Mumbai league, highlighting a discrepancy with IPL’s approach, which generally reserves participation for senior-level players.
IPL CEO Hemang Amin addressed the issue by explaining that Suryavanshi was eligible due to his experience in first-class cricket. Amin clarified to Naik that a player’s eligibility for the IPL relies on their participation in the Ranji Trophy, setting a precedent.
According to IPL regulations, an under-19 player who has participated in First Class or List A cricket for their state can register for the auction. The rules state:
-
An Indian U19 player can register for a Player Auction if, by the auction date, they are registered with a State Association and have played at least one First Class or List A match. IPL matches count as List A cricket.
-
Participation in the India U19 team or squad alone does not qualify a player for the auction.
-
An Overseas U19 player can register if they are affiliated with their local cricket authority and have played First Class or List A cricket. IPL matches count as List A cricket.
The IPL’s eligibility guidelines, as shared with franchises, do not mention players under 16. With the AGM affirming Suryavanshi’s eligibility based on his first-class experience, a new benchmark seems established, potentially enabling other talented players under 16 to join the league in the future.
