India Aims for Victory as T20I Series with New Zealand Intensifies in Decisive Match
As teams prepare for a major ICC event like the T20 World Cup, bilateral series serve as an excellent opportunity to refine strategies and finalize player combinations.
While the outcome of such contests often becomes secondary to broader objectives, a series victory can significantly boost morale ahead of a multi-nation tournament. India seeks such a boost as it faces New Zealand in the third T20I at Guwahati’s ACA Stadium on Sunday.

Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India secured commanding victories in Nagpur and Raipur, setting their sights on clinching the five-match series. The team is finding its rhythm at the perfect time.
The back-to-back wins indicate that India is piecing together its winning formula, particularly highlighting the batting line-up’s depth and versatility, whether setting a target or chasing one.
Recently, Suryakumar’s form had been a concern, as he had not scored a half-century since late 2024.
However, the 35-year-old signaled a return to form in Nagpur with a score of 32 and reinforced this improvement in Raipur with a spectacular unbeaten 82 (37b, 9×4, 4×6), helping chase a 209-run target inside 16 overs on Friday.
Before the series, selectors made some tough decisions, shaking up key roles. Shubman Gill, the then vice-captain, and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma were dropped, with Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan stepping in.
Kishan, who had been out of favor for two years, made his way back into the team by amassing runs in domestic cricket across formats. Although primarily a reserve wicketkeeper, Tilak Varma’s injury allowed the Jharkhand player to step in at No. 3 for the first two games, delivering a match-winning performance (76, 32b, 11×4, 4×6) in Raipur, much to the team’s satisfaction.
In terms of bowling, while Arshdeep Singh had a challenging outing in the second match, the rest of the attack — without leading bowler Jasprit Bumrah — effectively restricted New Zealand with their disciplined middle-overs performance.
The visitors face several issues to address. Opener Devon Conway has yet to find his form on this tour, and the bowling unit has struggled to contain India’s batters in both matches, needing to devise a tighter strategy.
“There’s a lot of spirit in this dressing room. Every match adds to our experience and builds towards future challenges,” remarked New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra on Friday.
Two months ago, this same venue witnessed India’s most significant Test defeat by runs against South Africa. Come Sunday, the team, led by coach Gautam Gambhir, has the chance to secure its ninth consecutive bilateral T20I series win and make a statement ahead of the global event.
