IND vs WI 2nd Test: ten Doeschate Advocates for Nitish’s Opportunity in Crucial Clash

Ten Doeschate Backs Nitish for Pivotal IND vs WI Test Battle

As the overcast sky cleared late Wednesday afternoon at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, bringing a glimpse of sunshine, the Indian cricket team engaged in an intense three-and-a-half-hour practice session. Following their victory in the first Test against the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs in Ahmedabad, another dominant performance from Shubman Gill and his team is anticipated when they face off in New Delhi starting Friday.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate sees the second Test as a chance to further evaluate Nitish Reddy’s all-round capabilities. In the previous match, the 22-year-old bowled only four overs of medium pace and did not have a batting opportunity, positioned at No. 8 in the order.

“We’re likely to keep the team unchanged. Developing a seam-bowling all-rounder for India is one of our medium-term goals. It’s crucial to have that role secured, especially for away games. Last week, Nitish didn’t have much chance to show his skills, so this is a great opportunity to see more of him without disrupting the team balance,” ten Doeschate shared with the press on Wednesday.

For Nitish to establish a long-term Test career, ten Doeschate believes maintaining fitness will be key.

“We believe he’s an outstanding seam-bowling all-rounder,” he said. “His body’s condition will be the main factor influencing his potential. The challenge for him is to gain playing experience between series. In a series like this, our focus should be on planning how to integrate him to ensure he receives enough game time.”
