Imam-ul-Haq Silences Critics with Impressive Comeback in PAK vs SA 1st Test
Experienced Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq stated on Sunday that while he has focused on honing his game, his discipline has never required attention as it has not been an issue throughout his career.
“I’ve dedicated a lot of effort to improving my batting and developing my shots. However, I haven’t worked on discipline because it has never been a problem for me, nor has anyone ever brought up attitude issues,” Imam told reporters.
Returning to the Test team after his last appearance in Australia in December 2023, Imam scored an impressive 93, helping Pakistan reach a solid total of 313 for five on the first day of the Test against South Africa.
Imam, whose previous appearance for Pakistan was during an ODI series in New Zealand earlier this year, mentioned that no concerns regarding his discipline have been raised.
He acknowledged that alternating between being in and out of the team is an aspect of a professional cricketer’s journey. “I have nothing else to say. I’ve learned that when presented with an opportunity, it’s vital to capitalize on it, as we’re fortunate to represent Pakistan among millions,” Imam explained.
While not disappointed about falling short of a century, Imam admitted that Pakistani batters have historically struggled to convert good starts into big innings at crucial times.
“I’ve been focusing on developing my shots to avoid slowing down or becoming stagnant during innings, as this has previously cost us matches,” he said.
Imam also supported the choice to prepare spin-friendly pitches for home series matches, stating, “I believe South Africa knows what to expect, but as professional cricketers, we need to adapt to various conditions. When we travel abroad, adapting and playing accordingly is essential, which we achieve by preparing thoroughly for a series.”
