Gujarat Giants Secure Sophie Devine for Rs. 2 Crore at WPL 2026 Auction
Former New Zealand captain Sophie Devine was acquired by the Gujarat Giants for Rs. 2 crore at the WPL 2026 Auction in New Delhi on Thursday.
The all-rounder had taken a break from cricket for personal reasons and missed the previous season of the Women’s Premier League.
In the first two seasons of 2023 and 2024, Devine played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, contributing to their title victory in 2024. Over 18 WPL matches, she amassed 402 runs with an average of 23.65 and a strike rate of 153.44, along with taking nine wickets. Her standout performance was a blazing 99 off 36 balls against Gujarat Giants in 2024, tying for the highest individual score in the tournament’s history.
Internationally, Devine recently retired from One-Day Internationals, having played her last match against England at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam during the Women’s World Cup. The 36-year-old scored 23 runs off 35 balls and claimed one wicket in her 159th and final ODI appearance.
Devine ends her ODI career as the only New Zealand player, and third overall globally, to surpass 4,000 runs and 100 wickets in women’s ODIs.
Having captained New Zealand since 2020, she led the team to a T20 World Cup victory in Dubai last year.
