Shubman Gill is set to embark on his first ODI challenge as India’s captain under unique circumstances. He will be leading a squad featuring Rohit Sharma, the outgoing captain, and Virat Kohli, Rohit’s predecessor and one of India’s cricket luminaries. This transition phase represents a blend of experience and transformation as India begins preparing for the next ODI World Cup, which is approximately two years away.
According to Gill, his relationship with the two senior players remains unchanged. “I think the outside narrative is different, but among us, everything is as it was, and that’s very comforting,” the 26-year-old stated on the eve of the first ODI in Perth.
“I often seek their insights on the game, whether it’s about reading pitches or handling various situations. I value their opinions and then make my decisions based on my understanding of the game,” Gill explained.
The new ODI captain shared that his discussions with Rohit and Kohli remain open and straightforward. “I enjoy a strong rapport with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai. Whenever I have doubts, I consult them, and they offer me advice readily. Their wealth of experience is invaluable,” he noted.
Leading two players he once admired represents a distinct opportunity for Gill. “To lead legends of the game whom I idolized growing up is a great honor. The hunger they exhibited inspired me, and I’m anticipating several learning moments during this series. If I encounter difficult scenarios, I won’t hesitate to seek their guidance,” he expressed.
As he begins his captaincy tenure, Gill views it as a chance to build upon the ODI legacy established by his predecessors. “It’s definitely thrilling to step into the role and carry forward the legacies of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma,” he said. “I have gained significant insights from them.”
“I’ve had many discussions with both Rohit and Virat regarding the future direction of the team and the culture they envision for Indian cricket. Their experiences and learnings will be crucial for our team moving forward.”
