“Batting orders are overrated, except for the two openers,” head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized in his statement on November 10. His philosophy may soon be put to the test as the national senior selection committee convenes at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai this Saturday to finalize India’s squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The primary area of debate is expected to be the opening combination.
Chaired by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar, the selection panel’s task is largely straightforward, with the opening slots being the main point of contention. Since Gambhir’s appointment as head coach in July 2024, India’s T20I team has become the country’s most stable and successful format across multiple competitions.
However, the opening slot has been a topic of ongoing debate. After a year-long hiatus, Shubman Gill was recalled before the Asia Cup in September, a move that sparked discussions. Since his comeback, Gill has accumulated 291 runs in 15 innings with a strike rate of 137.26; his top score being a 28-ball 47 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Despite being decent, these statistics have not entirely met the expectations set for a modern T20 opener.
Gill’s return meant Sanju Samson, who had enjoyed a successful year at the opening position, had to make way. Samson had scored three centuries as an opener. Yashasvi Jaiswal also remains a strong contender. Chosen over Gill as the reserve opener for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Jaiswal has further strengthened his case with impactful performance in limited opportunities with the national team.
The selectors now face the decision of whether to persist with Gill, who is also India’s vice-captain, and opt for Jaiswal as the reserve opener, or reassess Samson’s role as a wicketkeeper-opener. The issue is compounded by Ishan Kishan’s timely resurgence, having been instrumental in leading Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
In addition to the opening dilemma, the role of reserve wicketkeeper is still debated. Jitesh Sharma seems likely to be the primary wicketkeeper should Gill play in the XI, leaving Samson and Ishan to vie for the backup position in the squad.
Elsewhere in the squad, things seem well-settled. One secondary question remains whether Rinku Singh, who was excluded from the 2024 T20 World Cup roster, will be left out again in favor of Washington Sundar. The Gambhir-Agarkar collaboration has shown a preference for all-rounders over specialists, giving Washington the potential advantage.
Ajit Agarkar is scheduled to address the media following the selection committee meeting on Saturday afternoon.
