England’s Men’s Managing Director, Rob Key, has announced that all-rounder Chris Woakes is not part of their future plans. Just a day after England revealed their squad for the Ashes tour, Key clarified that Woakes might not be considered beyond the upcoming Ashes series.

“It’s been a really challenging time cricket-wise, especially with the timing of the shoulder injury and the possibility of it happening again soon for Chris Woakes,” Key commented.

“He was running against the clock to be ready for the Ashes. Once you’re out of an Ashes series, you start looking at the next cycle. So, currently, Chris Woakes is not in our plans at all.”

A notable change in England’s Ashes squad is Harry Brook taking over as vice-captain from Ollie Pope, who had led the team during Ben Stokes’s absence in the recent Oval Test against India. The decision followed a discussion between Key, head coach Brendon McCullum, and captain Ben Stokes.

“It’s straightforward – we believe (Brook) is the ideal choice for the role,” Key explained. “With his growing leadership experience, we think Harry Brook merits the position. There are no hidden reasons behind this decision, just our belief that Harry Brook is the best vice-captain.

“I think Pope anticipated this change. Vice-captaincy isn’t always the crucial decision. We could have opted to have no vice-captain. When Pope has taken on the role, he’s excelled in various capacities we’ve asked him to fill over the years. Harry Brook is just the more suitable leader now and for the future, hence the choice.”

Despite the change in leadership, Key assured that Pope’s position as Test No. 3 remains unaffected. Jacob Bethell is seen as a potential candidate for this position, but this competition is separate from the leadership change.

Discussing the competition between Pope and Bethell for the No. 3 spot, Key stated, “Ollie Pope has performed well in this challenging role, often facing the pressures of form fluctuation. This is common for international cricketers. It’s a tough path.

“There’s no strategic scheme to make it easier to drop Ollie Pope by removing his vice-captaincy. Whether vice-captain or not, if we believe you aren’t the right fit at your batting position, we’ll replace you with someone who can perform better… Ollie Pope currently holds the position. The final XI will likely be decided two days before the Perth Test.”
