Former Sri Lankan Test cricketer, Dammika Ranatunga, who is also the elder brother of World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga, was arrested by the country’s anti-graft commission and subsequently released on bail.

The Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) announced that the 63-year-old was taken into custody due to irregularities in the tendering process for purchasing crude oil by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) in 2017, during his tenure as chairman.

CIABOC reported that Dammika’s actions resulted in a loss of 800 million Sri Lankan rupees for the CPC. Furthermore, Dammika’s younger brother, Arjuna Ranatunga, has been listed as the second accused in the case. However, Arjuna has yet to be apprehended as he is currently abroad. At the time Dammika led CPC, Arjuna served as the Minister of Petroleum Industries.

Dammika has cricketing credentials as well, having played two Test matches against Australia as an opener in the 1989-90 season, and he later became the first CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, the country’s cricket governing body.
