England Cricketers Face Scrutiny Over Excessive Celebrations During Ashes

England's Ashes Joy Sparks Debate on Celebration Etiquette

England’s managing director of men’s cricket, Rob Key, plans to examine the team’s alcohol consumption following reports that their mid-Ashes beach break may have involved excessive drinking. England lost the first three Tests, allowing Australia to secure the Ashes in just 11 days of play.

Between the second and third Tests, the squad visited Noosa, a resort town on the Sunshine Coast near Brisbane, as a pre-planned part of their itinerary to help players relax during the long tour. Although Key didn’t accompany the players to Noosa, he expressed no issue with the break itself. However, he stated he would be concerned if evidence of excessive drinking were confirmed.

A BBC report suggested some players spent six days drinking, more than half of the total number of days dedicated to playing Tests in the series. Key commented on Tuesday in Melbourne, where the fourth Test is set to begin Friday: “If there are indications of our players drinking excessively, we will definitely look into it.”

“Excessive drinking has no place in an international cricket team at any point, and ignoring such behavior would be a mistake. From what I’ve gathered, the players behaved very well.”

He continued, “We have various ways to ascertain exactly what transpired. From all accounts, they enjoyed meals together, didn’t stay out late, and only consumed minimal alcohol, which is acceptable to me. Anything beyond that would be concerning.”

Additionally, Key addressed past reports of players seen drinking the night before a match in New Zealand, shortly before the Ashes. A social media clip showed white-ball captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell reportedly out in Wellington before the third One-Day International on November 1.

Key noted, “That incident didn’t warrant formal warnings, but perhaps informal ones. It served as a reminder of the environment they’re entering. I don’t mind a player having wine with dinner, but anything further seems absurd.”
