Afghanistan kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 journey with a dominant victory over Hong Kong, driven by Azmatullah Omarzai’s exceptional all-round performance. He scored 53 runs off just 21 balls and took 1 wicket for 4 runs. Post-match, Omarzai spoke about the difficulties of batting lower in the order and attributed his achievements to his self-belief.
“Batting in the lower order is very challenging, but it’s all about belief,” Omarzai explained. “The captain and coach believe in me. I was backing myself and aiming to strike the ball straight when it was coming nicely.”
Omarzai’s first T20I half-century was remarkable, coming in just 20 balls, featuring five sixes placed between extra cover and deep midwicket. Joining opener Sediqullah Atal (73* off 52) at 95 for 4 in the 13th over, Omarzai helped stabilize the team until the 16th over. “After early wickets, I was coordinating with Sediqullah to bat till the 16th over and then target boundaries. We aimed to hit straight and chose our preferred deliveries.” Their partnership enabled a late flurry, adding 69 runs in the last four overs, including three fours and six sixes.
When asked about his role as an allrounder, Omarzai confidently stated, “I consider myself both a batter and a bowler. When I bowl, I feel I’m a proper bowler; when I bat, I’m a proper batter. It’s equally split.”
Captain Rashid Khan praised the team’s performance but highlighted their struggles with early wicket losses. “Posting a total on the board is good. In the last series, early wickets were a concern that we need to address. Upcoming matches are crucial, and improving this area is important…overall, it was a commendable performance.”
Rashid also emphasized the strategic advantage of Afghanistan’s three-pronged spin attack during defense. “Having skilled spinners adds extra pressure. With runs on the board, batters taking risks become more susceptible, enhancing our defensive play compared to chasing.”
The statistics support this. Since January 2024, Afghanistan has triumphed in 12 of 16 T20Is when batting first, but only clinched three wins out of 11 while chasing, with one no-result. Rashid acknowledged the need for improvement in this area. “In T20, we must also chase effectively, so nurturing a chasing mentality is essential for a strong record.”
Notably, 24-year-old Mujeeb Ur Rahman did not play against Hong Kong, yet Afghanistan still had six bowling options. Rashid admitted that selecting the lineup is challenging. “It’s a tough decision to leave out players like Mujeeb, and Noor in some matches. We assess who can be more successful against specific batters. Having options is beneficial and simplifies the selection process,” he concluded.
