Dewald Brevis, a 22-year-old batter, was the most expensive player in SA20 history, purchased by the Pretoria Capitals for an astounding R16.5 million. The Capitals, who entered the auction with R32.5 million, allocated over half of their budget to secure Brevis. The initial bidding war involved the Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals, with the price quickly surpassing R10 million before the Capitals emerged victorious. The Super Kings remained competitive until the Capitals offered the winning bid.
Aiden Markram, a successful SA20 captain with three titles for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, was another marquee signing. The Durban Super Giants and Pretoria Capitals showed strong interest. Before purchasing Brevis, the Capitals competed for Markram. The price escalated to R12.4 million with the Super Giants in the lead. Sunrisers exercised their Right To Match, leading to a final Super Giants bid of R14 million, which Sunrisers opted not to match.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, acquired by the Super Kings for R9 million, was the third-highest purchase at the auction. Other notable signings included Gerald Coetzee (R7.4 million to DSG), Nandre Burger (R6.3 million to JSK), Matthew Breetzke (R6.1 million to SEC), Rassie van der Dussen (R5.2 million to MICT), Ottneil Baartman (R5.1 million to PR), and Anrich Nortje (R5 million to SEC).
Kyle Verreynne’s auction involved dramatic dynamics. Initially sold to the Royals for a base price of R200,000, the Capitals exercised their Right To Match. The Royals responded with a staggering R2.3 million bid, a 1050% increase, causing the Capitals to withdraw.
South Africa’s Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma again received no bids for the second consecutive season. After not being picked in the inaugural SA20 Auction, Bavuma joined Sunrisers as an injury replacement and was retained for the next season before being released. James Anderson, a 43-year-old pacer, also went unsold.
