Devine Shows Support for Pressured India in 2025 ODI Women’s World Cup Showdown

Devine Backs India Amidst Pressure in 2025 Women's Cricket World Cup Clash

Over the past few days, New Zealand has faced disappointment as rain in Colombo led to the cancellation of two vital Women’s World Cup matches. As the team prepares for a crucial match against India at the D.Y. Patil Stadium, captain Sophie Devine acknowledged that the pressure will be on India as they play on home ground.

“We fully realize that India remains the favorite, undeniably. We’re proud to embrace the underdog role, as Kiwis often do,” Devine stated on Wednesday. She added, “We are aware of the pressure India faces at home, but we intend to focus on controlling what we can and sticking to our strengths as a Kiwi team.”

India is at risk of exiting the group stage after three consecutive losses, making their upcoming matches must-win situations.

Devine expressed understanding towards the host nation.

“To be honest, I can’t fathom the sort of pressure the Indian team is experiencing. During our home World Cup, the pressure to perform in front of our own fans and country was sometimes overwhelming. I can’t imagine what it’s like for them with a billion people watching and all the expectations placed upon them. I have genuine empathy for them having to manage that while also focusing on their performance,” she remarked.
