De Kock’s Dazzling 90 Powers South Africa to T20I Series Equalizer

De Kock's Explosive 90 Seals Series Comeback for South Africa

Watching Quinton de Kock bat is always a pleasure. The talented opener delivered an outstanding performance at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium on Thursday, showcasing several of his trademark shots to score a crucial 90 off 46 balls (5×4, 7×6). His efforts were instrumental in South Africa’s 51-run victory over India in the second T20I.

The Proteas made the most of India’s lackluster bowling after choosing to bat first, accumulating a formidable total of 213 for four in their 20 overs.

De Kock was the standout contributor, reaffirming his status as one of the most formidable openers in white-ball cricket.

While Reeza Hendricks (8 off 10 balls) and Aiden Markram (29 off 26 balls, 1×4, 2×6) struggled to find their rhythm early on, de Kock faced no such obstacles, effortlessly sending the ball to the deep square-leg boundary with style.

Yuvraj Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur’s stands were unveiled, providing a nostalgic backdrop as de Kock launched some elegant leg-side sixes reminiscent of Yuvraj’s playing days.

The situation looked bleak for India when South Africa reached 90 for one at the halfway mark.

De Kock’s most commanding shot of the evening was a six hit over Arshdeep Singh’s head, which appeared to unsettle the left-arm pacer. Arshdeep gave away seven wides in a prolonged 13-ball 11th over that cost India 18 runs. The live broadcast also captured India head coach Gautam Gambhir visibly frustrated with Arshdeep’s persistent lack of control.

Markram soon joined in, hitting consecutive sixes off Varun Chakaravarthy (two for 29). However, his third attempt was unsuccessful as he mishit the ball straight to deep midwicket in the same over.

De Kock’s explosive innings ended when he ran himself out, following a quick stumping by wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma after de Kock edged the ball.

In the closing overs, Donovan Ferreira (30 not out, 16b, 1×4, 3×6) and David Miller (20 not out, 12b, 2×4, 1×6) went after Jasprit Bumrah (none for 45) and Arshdeep, scoring 49 runs off the final three overs and effectively batting India out of the game.

India conceded 22 extras, including 16 wides, which boosted South Africa’s momentum.

The match’s outcome was predictable once India lost Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav within the first four overs.

India might be worried about the form of its captain and vice-captain ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Axar Patel’s move to No. 3 didn’t work out, leaving the Indian chase in disarray. With 133 runs needed from the last 10 overs and only six wickets in hand, India’s chances of victory faded away.

Only Tilak Varma (62 off 34 balls, 2×4, 5×6) put up resistance as India was bowled out for 162 in 19.1 overs. The team will need to reassess and strategize as the series moves to Dharamshala.
