Cricket Unites: Ashes Teams Pay Tribute to Bondi Heroes at SCG

SCG's Salute: Ashes Rivals Honor Bondi Heroes

Prior to the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney on Sunday, the cricket teams of England and Australia paid tribute to the emergency service personnel and civilians who responded to the recent mass shooting at Bondi Beach.

The teams formed an on-field guard of honor, which drew loud applause from the sold-out crowd. The most significant applause was reserved for hero Ahmed al Ahmed, recognized for his bravery in confronting one of the attackers and disarming him.

The attack, which occurred on December 14 near the Sydney Cricket Ground, targeted a Hanukkah event. Father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram are accused of carrying out this antisemitic terrorist attack, which resulted in the tragic loss of fifteen lives and injuries to dozens more.

Cricket Australia’s chief executive, Todd Greenberg, described the event as “a devastating tragedy” and praised the courage of first responders and community members. He stated, “The incredible acts of bravery by first responders and community members at the scene of the Bondi attack were a reminder of the spirit of community and self-sacrifice that unites us as a nation.”

To ensure safety during the Test match, heightened security measures are in place, featuring uniformed and mounted police, as well as public order and riot squad officers. These precautions are similar to those implemented during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, where specially trained police carried semi-automatic rifles.

Among those recognized during the event were ambulance workers, police officers, surf lifesavers, and members of Jewish community groups.
