The IPL 2026 auction is tentatively scheduled for the second or third week of December, likely from December 13 to 15. According to franchise officials who have communicated with BCCI authorities, these dates are being considered, although the league’s Governing Council has yet to finalize the schedule.
There is currently no indication of the auction being held overseas, as it was in previous years in Dubai (2023) and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2024). Sources from franchises suggest that it would not be surprising if the BCCI opts to host the mini-auction in India. However, a final decision is pending.
It is reasonably certain that the deadline for retention is November 15. By this date, franchises must submit the names of players they plan to release before the auction. Significant changes are not expected, except potentially from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who finished last in the previous season.
Reportedly, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, Sam Curran, and even Devon Conway from Chennai Super Kings may be released. The five-time champions have INR 9.75 crore added to their budget following R Ashwin’s retirement from the IPL.
Sanju Samson tops the list of potential releases from the Royals, unless a trade for the captain is finalized. There have been discussions about releasing their two Sri Lankan spinners, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, but with Kumar Sangakkara returning as head coach, this decision might change.
Players like T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, and David Miller may seek new teams, though nothing is confirmed yet, similar to the situation with Venkatesh Iyer, who was the third most expensive purchase at the last auction by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 23.75 crore.
According to franchise insiders, Cameron Green is anticipated to be a top prospect at the auction. The Australian all-rounder missed the previous auction due to injury but has already garnered interest from multiple teams and is expected to be highly sought after.
